The Zero Copula (3rd Person Singular/Plural)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Hungarian, you don't need a verb for 'is' or 'are' when talking about the 3rd person.

  • Omit 'van' (is) for 3rd person singular: 'Ő boldog' (He is happy).
  • Omit 'vannak' (are) for 3rd person plural: 'Ők boldogok' (They are happy).
  • Use the verb only for existence or location: 'A könyv az asztalon van' (The book is on the table).
