Direct Object Suffixes on Verbs

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Amharic, you attach the object directly to the end of the verb instead of using a separate word.

  • Add -w (him/it) to the verb: 'saw him' becomes 'ayew'.
  • Add -at (her/it) to the verb: 'saw her' becomes 'ayat'.
  • Add -achew (them) to the verb: 'saw them' becomes 'ayachew'.
Verb + Object Suffix = One Word

Meanings

Amharic uses suffixes attached to the verb stem to indicate the direct object of the action, effectively merging the pronoun and the verb.

1

Direct Object

Indicates the person or thing receiving the action.

“አየሁት (I saw him)”

“ጠራኋት (I called her)”

Object Suffixes for Past Tense

Pronoun Suffix Example (Verb: Saw)
Him -u/-t ayehut
Her -at ayehwat
Me -gn ayegn
You (m) -h ayehh
You (f) -sh ayehsh
Them -achew ayehachew
