Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the Past Perfect to describe an action that was completed before another specific moment or action in the past.
- Combine the past form of 'to be' (бях) with the past active participle (l-participle).
- The participle must agree in gender and number with the subject (e.g., бил, била, било, били).
- Use it with 'вече' (already) to emphasize the sequence of events.

Smart Tips
The verb in the other part of the sentence is almost always going to be in the Past Perfect if the whole context is in the past.
Use 'Бях забравил...' (I had forgotten) to explain the cause of the mistake.
Remember: -л (M), -ла (F), -ло (N), -ли (Plural). It's the same as the past tense of 'to be' (бил, била, било, били).

`Ядох` is 'I ate' (simple past). `Бях ял` is 'I had eaten' (happened before another past event).
No, but `вече` (already) is a very common marker that makes the sequence clearer.
Yes, very much so! It is not just a literary tense; people use it daily to explain sequences of events.
Put `ли` after the auxiliary: `Беше ли чул?` (Had you heard?).
