Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use 'не' before the past form of 'to be' to say something hadn't happened before another past event.
- Place 'не' directly before the auxiliary verb 'бях' (e.g., 'не бях чел').
- The main verb stays as an -л participle and must agree in gender/number (чел/чела/чело/чели).
- Short pronouns (clitics) usually sit between 'не' and the auxiliary or after the auxiliary.

문화 노트
Bulgarians are very precise about whether they witnessed an event or heard about it. While 'не бях' is for things you know directly, you'll hear 'не бил' for things being retold.
Using the Past Perfect to explain a lack of action is seen as more polite and explanatory than the blunt Past Simple.
In some western dialects, the auxiliary 'беше' might be replaced by 'бе', but this is non-standard.
The Bulgarian Past Perfect is a periphrastic construction inherited from Old Church Slavonic, using the auxiliary 'to be' and the resultative participle in -l.

자주 묻는 질문 (8)
In many cases, yes, but it changes the meaning. Simple Past is for a finished action; Past Perfect is for a state that existed *before* another action. Using Past Perfect makes you sound more fluent and precise.
Usually, it goes `не` + `го` + `бях` or `не` + `бях` + `го`. Both are used, but `не го бях` is very common in speech.
Yes, for the Past Perfect, we use the past active aorist participle, which always ends in -л, -ла, -ло, or -ли.
'Чел' is for a male speaker/subject, and 'чела' is for a female speaker/subject.
Absolutely! Especially when making excuses or explaining why something happened (e.g., 'I hadn't seen the sign').
It sounds repetitive but it's `не бях бил`. For example: `Не бях бил там преди` (I hadn't been there before).
In the indicative mood (what we are learning), no. In the renarrative mood (reporting what others said), the auxiliary is often dropped in the 3rd person.
Forgetting that the participle must be plural for 'we', 'you (pl)', and 'they'. They often say 'не бяхме чел' instead of 'не бяхме чели'.
