Forgetting is often used as a polite 'buffer' in social obligations. If you cannot attend an event, saying you forgot the time is sometimes less offensive than saying you were too busy, as it implies a human lapse rather than a priority choice. In the fast-paced life of Tehran, 'Yādam raft' is frequently paired with complaints about traffic (terāfik) or 'sholughi' (busyness) to justify the lapse. The concept of 'Yād' is sacred. To be 'in someone's memory' (dar yāde kasi budan) is a sign of love. Therefore, 'Yādam raft' can sometimes carry a heavier emotional weight in romantic contexts, implying a loss of affection. In Dari, 'Az yādam raft' is also very common, but you might also hear 'Farāmusham shod' (It became forgotten to me) more frequently in semi-formal speech than in Iran.
