Expressing Duration: For three hours
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Armenian, you usually don't need a word for 'for' to express duration; just state the time directly.
- Use the number + time unit directly after the verb: 'Ես քնեցի ութ ժամ' (I slept eight hours).
- Keep the time unit in the singular form after numbers: 'երեք ժամ' (three hours), not 'ժամեր'.
- Do not translate the English 'for' as 'համար' when talking about past duration.
Meanings
Used to indicate the length of time an action or state persists, typically answering the question 'How long?' (Որքա՞ն ժամանակ).
Completed Duration
Expressing how long a past action lasted using the simple noun phrase.
“Ես հինգ տարի ապրեցի Լոնդոնում:”
“Նա երկու ժամ հեռուստացույց դիտեց:”
Intended Duration
Using the instrumental case (-ով) to show how long someone intends to stay or do something.
“Ես գալիս եմ երկու օրով:”
“Մենք գնում ենք մեկ շաբաթով:”

In Armenian, nouns following any number (except one) remain in the singular form. This applies to all counting, including time.
Use the phrase `երկար ժամանակ` or simply `երկար`.
Use `երեք ժամից`. The `-ից` suffix indicates 'starting from now'.
No, you can just use the verb of the action. `Ես երեք ժամ կարդացի` is more common than `Իմ կարդալը տևեց երեք ժամ`.
