Hindi is a Category III language for English speakers, requiring about 1,100 hours. The Devanagari script can be learned in a few weeks, and Hindi shares many Sanskrit-origin words with English through their common Indo-European roots.
Hindi has a different script and grammar structure (SOV word order), but shares Indo-European roots with English. The phonetic script means pronunciation is consistent, and postpositions replace prepositions.
Hindi features the Devanagari script with its characteristic headline, a phonetically precise writing system, gendered nouns, postpositions instead of prepositions, and a rich system of verb conjugations.
Over 600 million people speak Hindi, making it the 3rd most spoken language globally. It is the official language of India (along with English) and is widely understood across South Asia.
