बस बदलना

You will mostly use this with 'helping verbs' to show necessity or intent. If you have to do it, you say बस बदलनी पड़ेगी. Notice how बदलना becomes बदलनी? That’s because बस is feminine in Hindi. It’s a lady! Treating the bus with that grammatical respect is key. You can use it when asking for directions too. 'Where do I change?' becomes कहाँ बस बदलना है? It works for daily commutes to the office or long-distance trips to your grandmother's village. It’s a very practical, 'get-things-done' kind of phrase.

Imagine you are texting a friend who is waiting for you. You might type: 'Bhai, late ho gaya, ek बस बदलना है.' (Bro, I'm late, I have to change one bus). Or imagine you are at a crowded Delhi bus station. You ask the conductor: 'Kya mujhe agle stand par बस बदलना पड़ेगा?' (Will I have to change buses at the next stop?). Don't use this if you are changing your mind about which bus to take while still at the first stop. That’s just 'choosing' a different bus. बस बदलना implies you’ve already started the journey on one. Also, don't use it for changing a tire! That would be टायर बदलना. If you use it there, people will look at you like you’ve tried to put salt in your tea. It’s specifically for the 'transfer' act.
