Using 'Ako' (If) and 'Kada' (When) in Conditionals
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use 'ako' for possibilities (if) and 'kada' for certainties or habits (when/whenever).
- Use 'ako' when the outcome depends on a condition: 'Ako pada kiša, ostat ću doma.' (If it rains, I'll stay home.)
- Use 'kada' for things that definitely happen or repeat: 'Kada dođem, nazvat ću te.' (When I arrive, I'll call.)
- In the future, both often trigger the 'Futur II' (budem + participle) for precise timing.
- Always use a comma if the 'ako/kada' clause comes first.

सांस्कृतिक नोट्स
Croatians often use 'ako Bog da' (if God wills) as a filler for any future plan, showing a cultural tendency toward cautious optimism.
In Dalmatia, 'kad' is often shortened and used even more frequently for habits.
Usage of 'ak' instead of 'ako' is very common in informal speech.
Both 'ako' and 'kada' have Proto-Slavic roots. 'Ako' is related to the particle 'a' and 'ko' (who/what), while 'kada' comes from 'koda' (at what time).

Yes, in casual speech it's very common: 'Ako imam vremena' instead of 'Ako budem imao'.
It's a formal version of 'ako', used in business or legal documents.
Use 'kada god'. For example: 'Kada god dođeš, dobrodošao si.'
Yes, but that's usually for 'Type 0' or 'Type 1' past facts. For 'would have', use 'da'.
