Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Indonesian doesn't change verb endings for time; instead, we use simple particles before the verb to show if an action is finished or ongoing.
- Use 'sudah' for completed actions: Saya sudah makan (I have eaten).
- Use 'sedang' for actions in progress: Saya sedang makan (I am eating).
- Use 'akan' for future actions: Saya akan makan (I will eat).
Meanings
These particles define the aspect of an action, indicating whether it is completed, ongoing, or anticipated, independent of the verb's form.
Completion (Sudah)
Action is finished or a state has been achieved.
“Saya sudah mandi.”
“Mereka sudah sampai.”
Progression (Sedang)
Action is currently happening right now.
“Ibu sedang memasak.”
“Ayah sedang bekerja.”
Future (Akan)
Action is planned or expected to occur.
“Saya akan datang.”
“Besok akan hujan.”
Not Yet (Belum)
Action has not happened yet, but is expected.
“Saya belum makan.”
“Dia belum bangun.”
