A2 Expression औपचारिक

Účet, prosím.

The bill, please.

मतलब

Asking for the check in a restaurant or cafe.

🌍

सांस्कृतिक पृष्ठभूमि

Waiters will almost always ask 'Dohromady alebo osobitne?' (Together or separately?). It is perfectly normal for a group of 10 people to pay separately, and the waiter will patiently calculate each person's share. Tipping is not usually left on the table. You tell the waiter the total amount you are paying as you hand over the cash or before they swipe your card. In business settings, the person who invited the others usually pays. They will catch the waiter's eye and say 'Účet, prosím' to signal they are taking care of it. In smaller villages, the 'účet' might still be tracked on a small piece of paper left on your table from the start. You bring this paper to the bar to pay.

💡

The Hand Gesture

If the restaurant is loud, make a 'writing' motion with your hand while saying the phrase to ensure the waiter understands.

⚠️

Don't Wait Forever

Slovak waiters won't bring the bill until you ask. If you sit there waiting, they will think you are just enjoying the conversation.

🎯

Rounding Up

When paying cash, instead of waiting for change and then giving a tip, just say the total amount you want to pay. It's much smoother.

💬

Card vs Cash

Always check if they accept cards before ordering, although most places in cities now do. Say: 'Dá sa platiť kartou?'
