Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Serbian, short pronouns must cluster together in a specific order: Dative before Accusative.
- The 'se' (reflexive) always comes last in the cluster.
- Dative pronouns (mi, ti, mu, joj, nam, vam, im) precede Accusative pronouns (me, te, ga, je, nas, vas, ih).
- The auxiliary verb 'je' (or other forms of 'biti') usually follows the pronoun cluster.
Meanings
This rule dictates the mandatory sequence of unstressed (enclitic) pronouns when multiple are used in a single clause.
Dative-Accusative sequence
Used when describing giving or showing something to someone.
“Pokazao mi ga je.”
“Rekao ti ga je.”
Reflexive inclusion
Used with reflexive verbs where a dative or accusative pronoun is also present.
“Čini mi se da je kasno.”
“Sećam ga se.”
