Don't use 预订 for people or appointments like a doctor's visit. For those, you should use 预约 (yùyuē). 预订 is mostly for physical things or services like rooms, tables, and tickets. Also, don't use it for things you've already paid for and are just picking up—that's more like 'ordering' or 订购. If you try to 预订 a haircut, the stylist might think you're trying to buy the whole salon!

In modern China, 预订 has become a survival skill. With a population of 1.4 billion, if you don't 预订, you might end up eating dinner at 10 PM. The rise of 'Super Apps' has made this word ubiquitous.
