"The hotel has a great view," they say. 相比之下，旅馆更便宜，也更有趣。 (By comparison, the hostel is cheaper and more fun.) In a work meeting, you might compare two marketing strategies. One is expensive and risky. 相比之下，第二种方案更稳妥。 (In contrast, the second plan is more stable.) Even when you are gaming, you might compare two characters. One has high attack. 相比之下，另一个防御力更强。 (By comparison, the other has stronger defense.) It shows up everywhere people make choices.

Use this when the contrast is the most important part of your message. It is perfect for pros and cons lists. Use it when you want to be persuasive. If you want your boss to pick Plan B, highlight the flaws of Plan A first. Then use 相比之下 to show why Plan B is the hero. Use it in reviews. Use it in comparisons of cities, food, or apps. It is great for Instagram captions where you compare "Expectation vs. Reality." It gives your writing a nice rhythm. It creates a "before and after" effect in the mind of the reader. It is also useful when you are trying to be polite. Instead of saying something is bad, you can say it is "okay," but 相比之下, the other thing is "better." It softens the blow of a negative critique. It is a very polite way to show preference.

Do not use it if there is no actual comparison happening. If you are just moving to a new topic, use 另外 (additionally) instead. Do not use it for very simple, emotional reactions. It is not a preposition like "than." It does not like to be squeezed in the middle of a sentence without proper structure. Let it breathe at the start of its own clause. It likes its space! Finally, do not confuse it with 相反 (on the contrary). 相反 is for opposites. 相比之下 is for degrees of difference.

You might hear 相较之下 (xiāngjiào zhīxià). This is almost identical but feels a tiny bit more formal or literary. It is like the difference between "compared to this" and "in comparison to this." Is it okay for HSK tests? Yes, it is a classic B2/C1 level phrase. It will earn you points for logic! Can I use it for people? Absolutely. 哥哥很安静。相比之下，弟弟很调皮。 (The older brother is quiet. In contrast, the younger brother is naughty.) Does it have to be at the start of a sentence? Usually, yes. It can follow a semicolon or a full stop. Is it regional? Not really. It is standard Mandarin used from Beijing to Singapore. Do I need to say 和...相比之下? No! That is a redundant mistake. Just use 相比之下 on its own to refer back to what you just said.
