Consonant Classes (High, Mid, Low)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Lao consonants are split into three 'families' (High, Mid, Low) that act as the foundation for every word's tone.

  • Mid Class (7 letters) starts with a neutral tone like 'ກ' (k).
  • High Class (6 letters) naturally rises like 'ຂ' (kh).
  • Low Class (14 letters) is the largest group including 'ຄ' (kh).

자주 묻는 질문 (6)

Historically, Lao had different types of sounds (voiced/unvoiced) that evolved into different tones. The classes preserve this history.

Yes. Without knowing the class, you cannot determine the tone, and in Lao, changing the tone changes the meaning of the word.

The Low class is the largest with 14 consonants and appears most frequently in common words.

No. When it is the main consonant, it sounds like 'h'. When it is a prefix (Hoh Sung), it is silent.

It is very similar, but Lao has fewer letters and the rules are slightly more consistent.

A letter's class is fixed, but you can use prefixes like 'ຫ' to create a High-class version of a Low-class sound.
