Basic Word Stress and Intonation

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Croatian stress almost always falls on the first syllable, and sentences have a musical, rising-falling melody.

  • Stress the first syllable: 'Kava' (coffee) is stressed on 'Ka'.
  • Avoid stressing the last syllable: Croatian words rarely end with a stressed syllable.
  • Use rising intonation for questions: Like English, questions go up at the end.
First Syllable (STRESS) + remaining syllables (unstressed) = 🎵
