REVERSE ENGINEERING: LASER PRINTER TONER CHIP
ملخص الذكاء الاصطناعي
This video provides a technical deep dive into the sophisticated security chips found in laser printer toner cartridges. Learners will gain an understanding of the "razor and blade" business model, where manufacturers prioritize hardware security over cost-savings to protect their revenue from third-party clones. Through a detailed silicon die teardown, the video explains engineering concepts such as metal layering to hide secrets, chemical mechanical polishing (CMP), and the integration of microprocessors and flash memory. Viewers will learn how complex hardware design and encryption protocols are used to authenticate genuine products and resist physical tampering in disposable electronics.

This is a toner cartridge of course for
a laser printer and as is typical these
days there's a little circuit board at
the base here and there's a chip on it.
Uh that chip provides things like
telling the printer what kind of
cartridges it is. Um and then the
printer can write to the cartridge and
tell it uh the number of times it's
printed so it has some sense of
utilization. And then of course perhaps
most controversial uh the chip is
designed so it's extremely difficult to
make a um third party knockoff. Uh, this
laser printer I use is a excellent
printer and I paid almost nothing for
it. Uh, that's the model um, the
manufacturer hopes to make back their
profits through selling uh, slightly
more expensive laser printer cartridges.
Um, let's uh, tear this chip apart and
see what they had to do. There's two
tensions here. This chip is obviously
part of the disposable assembly, so I'd
imagine the engineers been told to keep
cost down. On the other hand, of course,
they want to make sure this cartridge is
difficult to clone, uh, so they can
ensure that revenue stream. Okay, so
here's the circuit board looking
straight down. Uh, four connections on
top, uh, power and ground and almost
certainly a serialized protocol like
I2C. Um, the chip of course sitting
here, a first observation is it's got a
lot of pins on it. It's a relatively
large package, so it implies it's going
to be a fairly significant piece of
silicon down there.
And the other parts uh are just simply
some small resistors and capacitors and
expensive components. The really
exciting bit is here. Let's uh take off
the packaging there and take a look at
the uh silicon die. Okay, so here's the
top metal die. Uh first things first, uh
obviously an unusual die. It's got only

Used to refer to the person or people that the speaker is addressing. It is the second-person pronoun used for both singular and plural subjects and objects.
To stop living or to cease to exist as a living organism. It marks the permanent end of all biological functions that sustain an individual.
A side is a flat surface of an object that is not the top, bottom, front, or back. It can also refer to the left or right part of something or a position next to a person or thing.
