Hyperbole and Understatement
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Hyperbole amplifies reality for emphasis, while understatement (litotes) minimizes it to create ironic or polite effect.
- Use hyperbole to express extreme emotion: 'আমি একশ বছর ধরে তোমার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছি!'
- Use litotes (negative understatement) for subtle emphasis: 'সে খুব একটা বোকা নয়' (meaning he is smart).
- Ensure context clarifies the intent so the listener isn't misled by the literal meaning.
Meanings
Hyperbole uses extreme exaggeration for effect, while understatement uses negation to imply a strong positive.
Hyperbolic Emphasis
Amplifying a situation to show intensity.
“আমার গলা শুকিয়ে কাঠ হয়ে গেছে।”

Litotes (Understatement)
Using a negative to express a positive quality.
“সে খুব একটা খারাপ গায় না।”
