فوق

You usually place فوق right before the thing you are describing. If the book is on the table, it is فوق الطاولة. If you are going upstairs, you are going فوق. It acts like a preposition. In many dialects, the final 'q' sound might disappear. It becomes a soft 'o' or a glottal stop. Don't worry about the grammar too much yet. Just point and say فوق!

Use it when giving directions to a taxi driver. Use it when telling your friend where the remote is. It is perfect for professional settings too. You might say a project is فوق التوقعات (above expectations). It works in text messages when you want someone to scroll up. It is a very safe, neutral word. You can't really go wrong with it in daily life.

Do not use فوق to mean 'north.' Even though north is 'up' on a map, use شمال. Also, avoid using it for 'more' in a general sense. If you want more coffee, don't say فوق. Say زيادة. It is about position, not necessarily quantity. If you are talking about waking up, that is a different root entirely.

In Arabic culture, 'high' things are often associated with respect. There is a beautiful phrase: على راسي من فوق. It literally means 'on top of my head.' People say this to show they are happy to help you. It implies you are held in high regard. Being 'above' isn't always about power. It is often about honor and hospitality.

In Lebanon or Syria, you will hear فوق pronounced like 'fo-o.' In Egypt, it sounds like 'fo'. In formal Modern Standard Arabic, the 'q' is sharp and clear. You might also hear فوقاني (fawqani) which means 'the upper one.' This is common when talking about apartment floors. It is a versatile root that grows with your vocabulary.
