Impersonal 'Може да' (May, Can)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'Може да' as a fixed block to express possibility or permission without ever changing the form of 'може' itself.

  • Rule 1: 'Може' never changes for person or number (e.g., 'Може да дойдем', not 'Можем да дойдем' for possibility).
  • Rule 2: The second verb after 'да' conjugates normally to show who is doing the action (e.g., 'Може да закъснееш').
  • Rule 3: Use 'Не може да' for impossibility or prohibition (e.g., 'Не може да бъде!').

FAQ (8)

Yes, but the grammar changes. 'Може би ще вали' vs 'Може да вали'. 'Може би' is an adverb, 'може да' is a modal verb construction.

No, it can be the 3rd person singular of 'мога' (He/She can). Context tells you if it's 'He can' or 'It is possible'.

Use the past impersonal 'можеше да' + the verb. For example: 'Можеше да дойда' (I could have come).

It's a shorthand for 'Is it possible/allowed?'. The verb is implied by the context (e.g., pointing at a chair).

'Не мога' means 'I am unable' (internal). 'Не може' means 'It is not allowed' or 'It is impossible' (external).

Yes, it's the most common way to express future possibility. 'Може да отидем' = 'We might go'.

It is neutral and used in all registers, from slang to academic writing.

Usually yes, but it can be in the past (perfective) to express past probability: 'Може да е дошъл' (He might have come).

In Other Languages

English moderate

It may / It can / May I

Bulgarian uses a fixed impersonal form for possibility, whereas English conjugates 'can' (I can, he can).

Spanish high

Puede que / Se puede

Spanish requires the subjunctive mood, while Bulgarian uses the 'да'-construction (indicative).

German moderate

Es kann sein, dass... / Man kann

German requires a 'dass' clause and different word order, while Bulgarian is more flexible.

Japanese low

~かもしれない (kamoshirenai)

Bulgarian puts the modal at the beginning of the verb phrase, Japanese at the end.

Arabic high

من الممكن أن (min al-mumkin an)

Arabic is more formal in its use of this construction compared to the very common Bulgarian 'може'.

Chinese moderate

可能 (kěnéng)

Chinese has no conjugation at all, so the 'fixed' nature of 'може' is natural in Chinese but a hurdle for Bulgarian learners.
