Forming the Conditional with -isi-

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

The conditional mood uses the marker '-isi-' to express actions that would happen or are desired.

  • Add '-isi-' to the stem: 'puhua' -> 'puhuisin' (I would speak).
  • Drop the final vowel of the stem if it's 'a' or 'ä' before adding '-isi-'.
  • Use the conditional for polite requests: 'Haluaisin kahvia' (I would like coffee).
