empêcher

So verwendest du es

Empêcher is a verb that means "to prevent" or "to stop." It's often followed by de + infinitive or que + subjunctive.

Examples:

  • J'empêche le chien de manger mes chaussures. (I prevent the dog from eating my shoes.)
  • Il faut empêcher que cela se produise. (It's necessary to prevent that from happening.)

When referring to preventing someone from doing something, use empêcher quelqu'un de faire quelque chose. If you are preventing something from happening, you can use empêcher que... or simply use the verb directly with the noun.

Häufige Fehler

A common mistake is to confuse empêcher with English "embarrass." The French word for "to embarrass" is embarrasser, which is a false friend.

Another mistake is to forget the preposition de when followed by an infinitive, or to incorrectly use a different preposition. For example, do not say empêcher à faire, but rather empêcher de faire.
