A 'big house' is often associated with the 'Oda' style architecture of Western Georgia, featuring large wooden balconies where guests are entertained. In the mountains, a 'big house' refers to the 'Machubi', a large stone communal living area for people and livestock during winter. In Old Tbilisi, 'big houses' often have shared courtyards (Italian courtyards), where the 'house' is a community rather than just a building. There is a trend of building 'big houses' in the suburbs (like Digomi or Tskneti) as a sign of the emerging middle and upper class.
