During a toast, avoiding eye contact with the person being toasted is seen as insincere. You must look them in the eye as you raise your glass. In rural areas, a young woman avoiding the eye of an older man is often seen as a sign of 'tavmdabloba' (humility) rather than guilt. In Tbilisi, like in many big cities, 'tvalis atsileba' is now a common way to maintain privacy in crowded spaces like the Metro. In a Georgian business setting, direct eye contact is expected. Avoiding it can make you seem untrustworthy or unprepared.
