In traditional nomadic culture, visual beauty was often tied to the health of livestock and the quality of craftsmanship in saddles and clothing. Complimenting these was a sign of respect. In Ulaanbaatar, fashion is a major part of identity. Direct compliments on clothing are very common and appreciated in social circles. On Mongolian Facebook and Instagram, 'Goyo haragdaj bna' is the most common positive comment, often abbreviated to 'Goyo' or 'Goyo bna'. When receiving a compliment, Mongolians often deflect it modestly. It's polite to return the compliment or downplay your own appearance.
