Brushing teeth is often the very first thing done after waking up, even before drinking water, to remove 'sleep impurity'. The use of 'Datiwan' (Neem twigs) is considered auspicious and healthy. It is often used during festivals like Rishi Panchami by women for ritual purification. In many villages, people use wood ash (kharani) or salt as a substitute for toothpaste when it's unavailable, scrubbing it with their finger or a twig. Electric toothbrushes and expensive toothpastes are becoming status symbols in cities like Kathmandu, though the phrase 'दाँत माझ्नु' remains unchanged.
