Negative Subject Prefixes (Si, Hu, Ha)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Swahili, you negate verbs by changing the subject prefix or adding a negative marker before the verb root.

  • For 'I', use 'si-' instead of 'ni-': 'Sichezi' (I am not playing).
  • For 'You' (singular), use 'hu-' instead of 'u-': 'Huendi' (You are not going).
  • For other subjects, use 'ha-' + subject prefix: 'Hatasoma' (He/she will not read).
