保单

You use this word whenever you talk about insurance paperwork. You might say you are 'checking' your 保单. Or perhaps you need to 'submit' your 保单 for a claim. It acts like a noun in almost every sentence. You can 'lose' it, 'find' it, or 'sign' it. Just don't try to use it for a general 'policy' like a company rule. That is a different word entirely!

Use it at the bank or the insurance office. Use it when talking to your family about health coverage. It is common when buying a new car or a house. Even when traveling, you might need to show your travel 保单. It is a very practical, everyday word for adulting in China. If you are filing a claim after a fender bender, this word is your best friend.

Do not use 保单 to mean a 'government policy' or 'company policy'. For those, use 政策. If you are talking about your personal 'life policy' or 'philosophy', this is not the word. 保单 is strictly for insurance contracts. Also, do not use it for a simple receipt or a bill. Those are 收据 or 账单. Using 保单 for a restaurant bill will get you some very confused looks from the waiter!

In China, insurance was once seen with a bit of skepticism. Now, it is a huge part of modern life. People often keep physical 保单 in a very safe place, like a 'special drawer'. However, 'electronic policies' or 电子保单 are becoming the standard. In some families, showing a child their life insurance 保单 is a way of saying 'I have planned for your future.'
