A1-A2 Grammar Review
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Romanian verbs change their endings based on the person (I, you, he/she, etc.) and the infinitive group.
- Identify the verb group by the infinitive ending (e.g., -a, -ea, -e, -i, -î).
- Remove the infinitive ending to find the stem.
- Add the specific suffix for the subject (e.g., eu cânt, tu cânți).
Overview
How This Grammar Works
băiat (boy), it becomes băiatul (the boy).fată (girl), it becomes fata (the girl). The tricky part is that the 'tail' changes depending on the gender of the word. Romanian has three genders: masculine, feminine, and neuter.Formation Pattern
-ul. For example, pom (tree) becomes pomul.
-e, just add -l. So, perete (wall) becomes peretele.
-ă, change that -ă to -a. Casă (house) becomes casa.
-e, add -a to the end. Mare (sea) becomes marea.
-i to the existing plural. This often creates a double i. Băieți (boys) becomes băieții (the boys).
-le. Case (houses) becomes casele and tablouri (paintings) becomes tablourile.
When To Use It
- Ordering food: If you want the specific soup of the day, say
Vreau ciorba. - Giving directions: If you are pointing to the bank across the street, say
Banca este acolo. - General concepts: Romanian uses the definite article for general concepts more than English does. For example, 'Life is beautiful' becomes
Viața este frumoasă. - After certain prepositions: When using prepositions like
pentru(for) orde la(from), you usually keep the article.Cadoul este pentru mama(The gift is for mom). - Job interviews: When talking about your previous company, you would say
Compania a fost mare(The company was big).
When Not To Use It
- Simple prepositions: After words like
la(at/to),cu(with),în(in), orsub(under), you usually drop the definite article. You sayMerg la școală(I go to school), notMerg la școala. - Exceptional prepositions: If there is an adjective describing the noun, the article comes back!
Merg la școala nouă(I go to the new school). - Proper names: Usually, you don't put articles on people's names. You wouldn't say
The Mariain English, and you don't do it in Romanian either. - Indefinite situations: If you are talking about 'a' thing or 'some' things, use the indefinite article (
un,o,niște) instead.
Common Mistakes
Merg la restaurantul because they want to say 'the restaurant'. But remember: after la, keep it simple: Merg la restaurant. Another common slip-up is the masculine -u- bridge. You can't just say băiatl; it is impossible to pronounce! You need that -u- to make it băiatul. It's like a little vocal cushion. Also, watch out for the double i in masculine plurals. It sounds like a long 'ee' sound. Saying copacii (the trees) correctly makes you sound like a pro. Don't panic if you sound like a pirate occasionally while trying to get these endings right; even the locals appreciate the effort!Contrast With Similar Patterns
un, o) as a way to introduce a stranger. 'A boy' is un băiat.băiatul. It is the difference between 'I want a coffee' (Vreau o cafea) and 'I want the coffee I ordered' (Vreau cafeaua). One is vague, the other is specific.Quick FAQ
Does every noun need an article?
No, only when you want to be specific or talk about a concept in general.
Why is it 'fata' and not 'fatăa'?
Because Romanian loves to shorten things. The -ă and -a merge into one strong -a.
Can I just skip the articles?
You can, but you will sound a bit like a robot or a very old telegram. 'Man hungry. Want bread.'
Is it the same for all regions?
Mostly, yes! While accents change, these grammar 'tails' remain the same across Romania.
