- Schadenfreude, German word Schadenfreude, right?

00:06

It means to take great joy in the pain

00:10

and suffering of others.

00:16

Fun fact, that word was never

00:18

translated into another language.

00:22

I wonder why my story happened in Edinburgh, Scotland.

00:27

What I do whenever I'm traveling is if I get

00:29

to be in the same place as my friends.

00:31

We try and spend as much time together,

00:33

and what we'll do is we'll order like food or we'll go out

00:35

and, and when we do that,

00:37

we allow one person to designate the meal.

00:39

And so whenever my day comes around consistently,

00:42

I pick Indian food, right?

00:45

Yeah. I think it's the best cuisine in the world.

00:47

Nothing comes close. You don't agree with me?

00:49

Let's meet in the parking lot. We can fight.

00:53

I love Indian food. Love my whole life.

00:57

And so we in Edinburgh, I'm with my friends.

00:58

They're like, where are we going, Trevor? What do you say?

00:59

I'm like, Indian food. They're like,

01:00

every time I was like, yes.

01:01

Every time Indian food. I'm like, oh, it's the same.

01:04

I'm like, then why do you keep asking me if you know,

01:05

you know, stop asking me.

01:08

And I searched. I searched for where we're gonna go.

01:11

'cause I always try and find the most authentic

01:13

Indian restaurant I can find.

01:14

Like, I mean, like authentic Indian restaurants.

01:17

Do you know what I mean? So what I'll do is I'll go

01:19

to a place, and then I'll ask around and I'll ask people.

01:22

I'll be like, where do you go? And then like,

01:24

where the white people tell me, I don't go there.

01:31

No. The reason, the reason it had to be so authentic.

01:33

Just, just so you understand a little bit of me,

01:35

I grew up in South Africa, as you know, right now,

01:38

what a lot of people may not know is

01:40

that South Africa has one of the largest Indian

01:42

populations outside of India.

01:45

And so I was lucky enough to grow up surrounded

01:46

by Indian culture, right?

01:48

In fact, one of my best friends growing up was a little

01:50

Indian boy by the name of Feas and pe.

01:52

Feas would get a packed lunch from his mom every single day.

01:55

Every single day. The meal was curry.

01:58

I know this because every day we'd sit down together,

02:02

Thon would open his little lunchbox, he'd open the bread,

02:06

look inside, and then he'd scream at the top of his lungs.

02:09

He'd be like,

02:10

God dammit, mommy.

02:19

He was like, oh, but this is like, is it bad?

02:23

He said, I don't even know anymore. I lost perspectives.

02:30

Hey, you can have it.

02:32

And he gave me his curry sandwich.

02:37

I bit it. And Toronto.

02:42

There, there are moments in your life

02:47

that will forever shape who you are.

02:51

Moments that will define who you grow on to be.

02:54

This was one of those moments for me.

02:56

I put that sandwich in my mouth.
