¿'News' es singular o plural?: ¿Cuál es la diferencia?

Trata a 'news' como si fuera information: parece plural por la 's', pero siempre es singular e incontable.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Even though 'news' ends in -s, it is always singular and takes the verb 'is', never 'are'.

  • Always use singular verbs: 'The news is good' (not 'are').
  • Use 'this' or 'that', never 'these' or 'those' with news.
  • Count news using 'a piece of' or 'some', never 'a news'.

Overview

### Overview
Nunca dirías The news are..., sino siempre The news is....
### How This Grammar Works
| Característica | Sustantivos Contables (report) | Sustantivos Incontables (news) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| ¿Se puede contar directamente? | Sí (one report, two reports) | No (*one news* es incorrecto) |
| ¿Tiene forma plural? | Sí (reports) | No (La palabra news no cambia) |
| ¿Usa los artículos a/an? | Sí (a report) | No (*a news* es incorrecto) |
| ¿Qué cuantificadores usa? | many, few, several | much, little, some, a lot of |
  • Mathematics is difficult for some people. (Las matemáticas son difíciles...)
  • Physics was my favorite subject at school. (La física era...)
  • Economics deals with the production of goods. (La economía trata...)
  • Enfermedades:
  • Measles is a common childhood disease. (El sarampión es...)
  • Diabetes requires careful management. (La diabetes requiere...)
  • Juegos y actividades:
  • Darts is a popular game in pubs. (Los dardos son...)
  • Gymnastics is very demanding.
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Present Simple | The news is on TV now. | Bad news travels fast. |
| Past Simple | The news was shocking. | The news came as a surprise. |
| Present Perfect | The news has been confirmed. | No news has arrived yet. |
| Future Simple | The news will be great. | The news will change everything. |
| Past Perfect | The news had been leaked. | The news had caused a panic. |
¿Cómo contamos las noticias?
Aquí es donde la cosa se pone interesante. Si news es incontable y no podemos decir one news, ¿cómo decimos tengo una noticia o tengo tres noticias?
Para esto, el inglés utiliza lo que llamamos partitivos o palabras de medida. Es como cuando en español decimos
una rebanada de pan
porque pan es el concepto general. Para news, las formas más comunes son:
  1. 1A piece of news (La forma más estándar).
  2. 2An item of news (Más formal, común en periodismo).
  3. 3A bit of news (Más informal, para el día a día).
¡Ojo con la concordancia! Cuando usas estas frases, el verbo debe concordar con el partitivo (piece, item, bit), no con la palabra news.
  • Singular: A piece of news is missing. (Una noticia falta).
  • Plural: Two pieces of news are very important. (Dos noticias son muy importantes).
Como ves, si quieres usar un verbo en plural, tienes que contar las piezas, no la palabra news directamente.
### When To Use It
El uso singular de news es absoluto. No importa si estás en una situación formal o informal. Aquí te doy algunos escenarios reales para que veas cómo aplicarlo naturalmente.
En el trabajo y contextos profesionales
Si trabajas en una oficina o estudias en la universidad, es muy probable que tengas que compartir información.
  • The news about the merger is confidential. (La noticia sobre la fusión es confidencial).
  • We have some good news regarding the project. (Tenemos buenas noticias respecto al proyecto).
Nota que usamos some en lugar de a. En español decimos una buena noticia, pero en inglés decimos some good news (algo de buenas noticias) o a piece of good news.
En la vida diaria y redes sociales
Imagínate que estás chateando por WhatsApp con un amigo sobre una serie de Netflix o un partido de fútbol.
  • Have you heard the news? The show is cancelled! (¿Te has enterado? ¡Han cancelado la serie!).
  • The news about the match was disappointing. (La noticia sobre el partido fue decepcionante).
Expresiones idiomáticas (Idioms)
El inglés tiene frases hechas con news que siempre respetan la regla del singular. Aprenderlas te hará sonar mucho más fluido:
  • No news is good news
: Es un refrán que significa que si no has recibido noticias, es porque probablemente no ha pasado nada malo. Literalmente:
    Ninguna noticia es buena noticia
    .
  • "That's news to me!
: Se usa cuando alguien te cuenta algo que no sabías y te sorprende. Equivale a nuestro
¡Eso es nuevo para mí! o ¡No tenía ni idea!".
  • Bad news travels fast
: Significa que las malas noticias se difunden mucho más rápido que las buenas.
### Common Mistakes
Como profesor, veo estos errores una y otra vez en estudiantes que hablan español. La mayoría ocurren por la interferencia lingüística (L1 transfer), es decir, intentar aplicar las reglas del español al inglés.
  1. 1El error del verbo en plural (The news are...)
  • Incorrecto: *The news are very sad today.*
  • Correcto: The news is very sad today.
  • ¿Por qué ocurre? En español decimos
    Las noticias son
. Tu cerebro ve la s y automáticamente quiere poner el verbo en plural.
  • Consejo: Sustituye mentalmente la palabra news por it. Si dirías It is sad, entonces debes decir The news is sad.
  1. 1Usar el artículo indefinido a (I have a news)
  • Incorrecto: *I have a great news for you!*
  • Correcto: I have some great news for you! o I have a piece of great news!
  • ¿Por qué ocurre? En español una noticia es perfectamente válido. En inglés, al ser incontable, a (que significa uno/una) no puede ir con news. Es como decir una agua.
  1. 1Confundir news con new
  • Incorrecto: *What is the new in your life?*
  • Correcto: What is the news in your life?
  • ¿Por qué ocurre? New es un adjetivo (nuevo/a). News es el sustantivo (noticias). No puedes usar el adjetivo como si fuera el nombre de la información.
  1. 1Usar many en lugar de much
  • Incorrecto: *There aren't many news today.*
  • Correcto: There isn't much news today.
  • ¿Por qué ocurre? Many se usa para cosas que se pueden contar (coches, libros). Para conceptos incontables como news, debemos usar much o a lot of.
### Contrast With Similar Patterns
A veces ayuda comparar news con otras palabras que sí se pueden contar para ver la diferencia de estructura.
| Concepto | Incontable (Singular) | Contable (Singular/Plural) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Información general | The news is... | The reports are... (Los informes son...) |
| Relato de hechos | The news was... | The stories were... (Las historias fueron...) |
| Anuncio oficial | The news has... | The announcements have... (Los anuncios han...) |
Fíjate que si usas palabras como reports, stories o announcements, puedes usar el plural tranquilamente. Pero si decides usar la palabra news, te comprometes con el singular.
Otro contraste importante es con la palabra Information. Al igual que news, information es incontable en inglés (aunque en español digamos las informaciones).
  • The news is interesting.
  • The information is useful.
Ambas siguen el mismo patrón. Si dominas news, automáticamente habrás mejorado tu uso de information, advice (consejo) y furniture (muebles), que son otros grandes dolores de cabeza para los hispanohablantes.
### Quick FAQ
1. ¿Puedo decir newses si quiero hablar de muchas noticias de diferentes fuentes?
¡No!
(¿Cuál es la noticia?) o Is there any news?. Aunque en tu cabeza estés pensando en plural, la estructura en inglés pide singular.
4. ¿News se refiere solo a lo que sale en los periódicos?
No, se refiere a cualquier información nueva que no conocías. Si tu hermana te cuenta que se va a casar, eso es news. Si tu jefe te dice que hay una reunión, eso es news. Es un concepto muy amplio.

Preguntas frecuentes (8)

It's a historical remnant. It comes from the plural of 'new' (new things), but over time, English speakers began to treat it as a single mass of information.

In standard modern English, no. It is always 'the news is'. Even in British English, where some collective nouns take plural verbs, 'news' stays singular.

Use the phrase 'pieces of news' or 'items of news'. For example, 'I have three pieces of news to tell you.'

They are both uncountable, but 'news' specifically refers to recent events, while 'information' can be any kind of data.

No, this is a common mistake. You should say 'some news' or 'a piece of news'.

Yes. You say 'Good news is hard to find,' not 'Good news are hard to find.'

It is still singular. 'The evening news starts at 6:00.'

Yes, in all modern contexts, 'news' is treated as an uncountable mass noun.
