Preposiciones de tiempo: in, on, at

Imagina una pirámide: in para periodos grandes, on para los días, y at para momentos precisos.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'at' for specific times, 'on' for days and dates, and 'in' for long periods like months and years.

  • Use 'at' for precise clock times like 'at 5:00 PM'.
  • Use 'on' for specific days and dates like 'on Monday'.
  • Use 'in' for months, years, and seasons like 'in summer'.
⏰ at [Time] + 📅 on [Day] + 🗓️ in [Month/Year]

Overview

Usamos in, on y at para diferentes fragmentos de tiempo.
In cubre bloques grandes como meses y años.

How This Grammar Works

¡Simplemente no funciona!

Formation Pattern

1
Usa at + Hora Precisa.
2
Ejemplo: at 9:00 AM, at noon.
3
Usa on + Días y Fechas.
4
Ejemplo: on Monday, on July 4th, on my birthday.
5
Usa in + Periodos Largos.
6
Ejemplo: in October, in 2025, in the summer, in the morning.

When To Use It

Úsalo para puntos como at sunset o at bedtime.
También incluye fechas como on May 12th. Si tiene la palabra day, usa on. Ejemplos: on Christmas Day.
Usa in para las cosas grandes. Úsalo para meses como in January. Úsalo para años como in 1999. Úsalo para estaciones como in spring. También lo usas para partes del día. Ejemplos: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening.

Common Mistakes

No digas in Monday. Este es un error clásico de principiante. Di on Monday.
No digas at the morning. Di in the morning.
No digas «on 2024».

Contrast With Similar Patterns

In the car (lugar) vs In the morning (tiempo).

Quick FAQ

Q

Preguntas frecuentes (8)

This is an old idiomatic exception in English. There is no logical reason, but 'at night' is the standard form.

Use 'on' for specific dates (on May 5th) and 'in' for just the month (in May).

Both are correct! 'At' is British, and 'on' is American.

No, that is incorrect. Days of the week always use 'on'.

Use 'in' for seasons (in summer, in winter).

No. Words like 'yesterday', 'today', and 'tomorrow' do not need prepositions.

Yes, 'noon' and 'midnight' are specific points in time, so they use 'at'.

Use 'in' for decades and centuries because they are long periods of time.
