Superlativos: El Mejor y el Peor (-est / most)

Los superlativos te ayudan a decir lo más o lo menos de algo en un grupo, usando the -est o the most.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Superlatives identify the 'number one' in a group of three or more using 'the' plus '-est' or 'most'.

  • Short words add -est: 'The tallest building' (max 20 words)
  • Long words use 'the most': 'The most beautiful' (max 20 words)
  • Always use 'the' before the superlative form (max 20 words)
The + Adjective + 🏆 (-est / most)

Overview

How This Grammar Works

No dices
un edificio más alto
(a tallest building); dices the tallest building.
También solemos usar frases como in the world, in my class, o of all time para mostrar el grupo del que estamos hablando. Por ejemplo,
This is the fastest car in the world.

7
happythe happiest
8
funnythe funniest
9
crazythe craziest
10
Palabras largas (2+ sílabas): ¡No cambies la palabra! Solo pon the most delante.
11
expensivethe most expensive
12
beautifulthe most beautiful
13
interestingthe most interesting
14
Los Rebeldes (Irregulares): Algunas palabras no siguen ninguna regla. Solo tienes que memorizar estas tres:
15
goodthe best
16
badthe worst
17
farthe farthest (distancia física) o the furthest (distancia metafórica).

When To Use It

  • Entrevistas de Trabajo: Describir tu greatest fortaleza o tu proyecto most successful.

  • El Doble Superlativo: Nunca uses most y -est juntos. No digas the most tallest. Es simplemente the tallest.
  • Olvidar el 'the': Decir
    He is tallest boy
suena como un robot. Siempre incluye the:
    He is the tallest boy.
  • Regla de Sílaba Equivocada: No digas the beautifulest.

Contrast With Similar Patterns

  • Comparatives (-er o more): Se usan para 2 cosas.
  • My phone is faster than yours.
  • This pizza is more delicious than the one we had yesterday.
  • My phone is the fastest one in the room.
  • This is the most delicious pizza I have ever eaten.

Quick FAQ

Q

That was the least interesting movie ever.

Q

Normalmente no decimos the least tall. Simplemente usamos la palabra opuesta: the shortest.

Q

¿Es the furthest o the farthest?

Q

¿Siempre necesito el the?

El 99% de las veces, sí. La única excepción es después de una palabra posesiva como 'my' (mi) o 'his' (su).

He is my best friend.
(¡Aquí no hace falta el the!).

⚠️

¡No repitas superlativos!

Evita decir the most tallest o the most best. Elige uno: the tallest o the best.

¡No te cortes!
💡

Si suena largo, lleva the most.

Preguntas frecuentes (8)

Because a superlative identifies one specific thing that is at the extreme. There is usually only one 'tallest' person in a room, so we use the definite article `the`.

No, this is a double superlative and it is incorrect. Since 'best' is already a superlative, you don't need 'most'. Just say `the best`.

In many cases, they are interchangeable. However, `farthest` is usually for physical distance, while `furthest` can also mean 'to a greater extent' (e.g., 'further study').

Double the final consonant for one-syllable adjectives that end in a single vowel followed by a single consonant (CVC), like `big` -> `biggest` or `hot` -> `hottest`.

Yes! For example, 'He runs the fastest' or 'She speaks the most fluently'. The rules for adverbs are very similar to adjectives.

Use `the most` for superlatives. Use `most` (without 'the') to mean 'the majority of' (e.g., 'Most people like music').

Most two-syllable words use 'the most' (e.g., 'the most famous'), but some can take both (e.g., 'cleverest' or 'most clever'). When in doubt, use 'most'.

Use `the least`. For example, 'This is the least expensive shirt in the store'.
