Fear of ghosts (khmaoch) is taken very seriously. It is common to see spirit houses (preah phum) outside homes to keep spirits happy so people don't have to be 'ភ័យខ្លាច'. The concept of 'Face' means people are often 'ភ័យខ្លាច' of public embarrassment or making others feel bad (ខ្លាចចិត្ត). During the Pchum Ben festival, people offer food to ancestors. This is partly out of love, but also to ease the 'ភ័យខ្លាច' that hungry spirits might cause trouble. In rural areas, 'ភ័យខ្លាច' might be associated with the forest (prey). The deep forest is seen as a place of both physical danger (animals) and spiritual danger.
