In small tea shops (Chaya kada), it's common to pay after consuming, not before. You simply tell the owner what you had and 'kāś koṭukkuka'. Kerala has one of the highest digital literacy rates in India. Even small vendors accept UPI. You'll often hear 'Google Pay cheyyām' as a synonym for 'kāś koṭukkuka'. When eating out with elders, the younger person often tries to pay, but the elder usually insists. This 'fight' to pay is a common sight. Tipping is not mandatory in Kerala but appreciated in restaurants. It's called 'bakshis' or simply leaving the 'bākki' (change).

In written Malayalam, it is 'Kāśu', but in speaking, the 'u' is almost always silent. Just say 'Kāś'.
