Theme and Rheme: Information Structure
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Theme is what you know (old info), Rheme is what you add (new info).
- Theme (Topic) usually comes first in the sentence.
- Rheme (Focus) carries the new information and often comes later.
- Armenian word order is flexible to highlight the Rheme.

Meanings
The organization of a sentence based on what is already known (Theme) and what is being introduced (Rheme).
Topic-Comment
Establishing a topic and providing new information about it.
“Արևը (Theme) ծագեց (Rheme).”

Contrastive Focus
Using word order to emphasize a specific element against alternatives.
“Գիրքը (Rheme) Արամը կարդաց, ոչ թե ուրիշը։”
“Արամը գիրքը (Rheme) կարդաց, ոչ թե ամսագիրը։”
