A1 Collocation 中性

കാശ് കൊടുക്കുക

കശ കടകകക

Give money

意思

Paying for something

🌍

文化背景

In small tea shops (Chaya kada), it's common to pay after consuming, not before. You simply tell the owner what you had and 'kāś koṭukkuka'. Kerala has one of the highest digital literacy rates in India. Even small vendors accept UPI. You'll often hear 'Google Pay cheyyām' as a synonym for 'kāś koṭukkuka'. When eating out with elders, the younger person often tries to pay, but the elder usually insists. This 'fight' to pay is a common sight. Tipping is not mandatory in Kerala but appreciated in restaurants. It's called 'bakshis' or simply leaving the 'bākki' (change).

💡

The 'U' Drop

In written Malayalam, it is 'Kāśu', but in speaking, the 'u' is almost always silent. Just say 'Kāś'.

⚠️

Recipient Suffix

Always remember to add '-nu' to the person you are paying. 'Raman kāś koṭuttu' means Raman paid. 'Ramanu kāś koṭuttu' means (someone) paid Raman.

🎯

Bargaining

If a price is too high, say 'Ithra kāś koṭukkān pattilla' (Can't pay this much money). It's a powerful bargaining phrase.

💬

G-Pay is King

Even if you are paying digitally, use the phrase 'Kāś koṭukkuka'. It's more natural than saying 'transfer money'.

Yes, 'paisa' is very common and slightly more informal. Both are interchangeable in daily life.

It is neutral. To be more polite, add 'please' (koṭukkū) or use a slightly more formal tone.

Say 'ഞാൻ കാശ് കൊടുത്തു കഴിഞ്ഞു' (Njan kāś koṭuttu kazhiññu).

'Kāś' is like 'cash/money' in daily talk. 'Paṇam' is more like 'wealth/finance' and is used in formal contexts.

If the context is clear (like at a checkout), you can just say 'Njan koṭukkām' (I will give/pay).

Say 'കാശ് കൊടുക്കണ്ട' (Kāś koṭukkaṇṭa).

Most Malayalis just use the English word 'bill'. 'Billu koṭukkuka' is also common.
