Using this phrase is easier than scrubbing a burnt pressure cooker! The most important thing to remember is the word order. In Hindi, we usually put the object before the verb. So, instead of saying धोना बर्तन in a sentence, you would say बर्तन धोना. For example, 'I am washing dishes' becomes मैं बर्तन धो रहा हूँ. If you want to ask someone else to do it (good luck with that), you’d say बर्तन धो दो. You can use it in various tenses: धोए (washed), धोऊंगा (will wash), or धोना पड़ेगा (will have to wash). It’s a very versatile phrase that fits into any conversation about housework, roommates, or surviving a weekend without a dishwasher.

Imagine you're on a WhatsApp group with your roommates. One person sends a photo of a messy kitchen with the caption: आज बर्तन कौन धोएगा? (Who will wash the dishes today?). Or consider a typical Bollywood movie scene where the hero helps the heroine in the kitchen to show he’s 'different'—he’ll definitely be बर्तन धोना at some point. You might also see this on TikTok or Instagram Reels where creators complain about the 'infinite loop' of dishwashing. In a professional setting, like a restaurant, a manager might tell a new worker: जल्दी से सारे बर्तन धो दो (Wash all the dishes quickly). If you're talking about just rinsing something quickly, you might use खंगालना. Using these variations will make you sound like you’ve been living in Delhi or Mumbai for years!

Depending on where you are in India, you might hear slight variations. In some regions, people might say बर्तन मलना (rubbing the dishes). You can also add adjectives to describe the state of the dishes: गंदे बर्तन (dirty dishes), जूठे बर्तन (dishes touched by mouth/used dishes), or ढेर सारे बर्तन (a whole pile of dishes). If you're talking about a lot of work, you might say बर्तनों का पहाड़ (a mountain of dishes). Learning these small additions helps you express the exact level of your kitchen-based suffering.

Is बर्तन singular or plural? It’s both! बर्तन can mean one plate or a hundred pots. Do I need to use 'dirty' with it? Usually, no. If you say you’re washing them, it’s implied they are dirty.
