Vowel Elision (Lopa Sandhi)
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Vowel Elision occurs when a word-final vowel is dropped before a following vowel to maintain phonetic flow.
- Drop the final 'a' or 'u' when the next word starts with a vowel: 'katha' + 'illa' = 'kathilla'.
- Elision is mandatory in many compound nouns to prevent hiatus.
- In spoken Malayalam, elision is more frequent than in formal written prose.

Lopa Sandhi is the grammatical process where a vowel at the end of a word is deleted when it encounters a vowel at the beginning of the next word.
