Kolkata is often called the 'Cultural Capital of India'. The International Kolkata Book Fair is a massive event where families spend the whole day browsing books and eating street food. The concept of 'Adda' (intellectual banter) often revolves around books. Being well-read is a prerequisite for participating in high-level social circles. During Saraswati Puja, students place their books at the feet of the Goddess Saraswati. This shows the sacred status books hold in the culture.
