has finally/at last happened
, le Present Perfect est ton meilleur ami !

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'finally' or 'at last' with the Present Perfect to show that something you wanted has happened after a long wait.

  • Put 'finally' between 'have/has' and the past participle: 'I have finally finished.'
  • Place 'at last' usually at the very end of the sentence: 'The sun has come out at last!'
  • Use these only when there was a delay or difficulty involved in the action.
Subject + have/has + 🏁 finally + Verb (ed/V3) + 😌 at last

Overview

C'est la différence entre dire « The bus has arrived » (ennuyeux, neutre) et « The bus has finally arrived!

How This Grammar Works

At last, de l'autre côté, c'est ton atout émotionnel.
It has finished at last!

2
Commence avec ton Sujet (I, You, We, They, He, She, It).
3
Ajoute ton auxiliaire (have ou has). Utilise has pour la team « S » : He, She, It.
4
Place finally juste ici !
6
Si tu préfères at last, mets-le tout à la fin de la phrase pour un effet dramatique maximum.
7
Exemple avec finally : I + have + finally + passed + my driving test.
8
Exemple avec at last : The rain + has + stopped + at last!
9
Petit conseil de pro : techniquement, tu peux mettre at last au début avec une virgule (« At last, I have found my keys!

When To Use It

». S'il n'y a pas de « Ouf », t'as probablement pas besoin de ces mots.

Common Mistakes

Ne dis pas « I finally have finished. Mets-le au milieu : « I have finally finished. »
À la place, tu dirais juste « My car has finally broken down. »

Contrast With Similar Patterns

Et pour in the end ? « We tried five restaurants and in the end, we went home.
» C'est plus un outil de narration. At last est bien plus axé sur le sentiment « Je n'arrive pas à croire que ce soit enfin fini ».
Ensuite, il y a just.

Quick FAQ

Tu ne dirais pas « I haven't eaten at last. » C'est juste déroutant.

Q : Est-ce que finally est formel ?

R: C'est polyvalent ! Tu peux l'utiliser dans un mail pro (« The report has finally been signed off ») ou un SMS à ta mère (« I've finally cleaned my room »).

Is finally est pour les états (ex : « The weather is finally warm »). Utilise has pour les trucs que tu as *faits*.

Q : Est-ce que at last a besoin d'une virgule ?

R: S'il est au début, oui. S'il est à la fin, non. « At last, the weekend has arrived! » vs « The weekend has arrived at last! »

FAQ (8)

Yes, you can say `I finally finished`. This is very common in American English. However, the Present Perfect `I have finally finished` emphasizes that the result is important *now*.

No, 'at last' is actually more emotional and idiomatic. 'Finally' is more neutral and can be used in both formal and informal writing.

Yes, but usually only when you are listing points (`Finally, I would like to say...`). To show relief, it's better in the middle.

`Finally` implies you were waiting for something specific. `In the end` often implies that there were many changes or problems before a result happened.

It's rare. We usually say `He still hasn't finished`. If you say `He hasn't finally finished`, it sounds like you expected him to be done by now but he's not.

90% of the time, yes. You can put it at the start for drama: `At last, the king has returned!`

Not exactly. `Eventually` means 'sometime in the future' or 'after a long time' but without the feeling of 'I'm so glad it's over'.

Usually no. You don't 'finally know' something unless you were searching for the information for a long time. You would say `I have finally found out the truth`.
