Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Khmer subscripts are reduced versions of consonants written below another consonant to create a cluster without a vowel sound in between.
- Subscripts are written directly under the main consonant: ក + ្ + ម = ក្ម (kma).
- They represent the same sound as the full consonant but without the inherent 'a' or 'o' vowel.
- Most consonants have a unique subscript form that looks like a simplified version of the main letter.
Meanings
Subscripts (ជើងអក្សរ) are used to form consonant clusters. They eliminate the inherent vowel of the consonant, allowing two or more consonants to be pronounced in a single syllable.
