البطاقة ابتلعتها الآلة

You use this phrase to report a problem. You can say it to a bank security guard. You can tell your friend why you can't pay for lunch. It is a very direct and functional sentence. You don't need fancy grammar here. Just state the fact. If you want to be specific, add the location. For example, الكارت اتبلع في الماكينة اللي قدام البنك (The card was swallowed in the machine in front of the bank).

Use it during financial emergencies. It is common when the electricity cuts out mid-transaction. It is also used if you enter the wrong PIN three times. Use it when calling the bank's customer service hotline. They will understand immediately. It is a phrase born of necessity and modern frustration.

Don't use this for a credit card that is simply declined. If the machine gives the card back but says 'No funds,' this phrase is wrong. Also, don't use it for other things like vending machines. While technically possible, it is almost exclusively for ATMs. Avoid using it in very poetic or romantic contexts. It is too 'tech-support' for a love letter!

In many Arabic-speaking countries, especially Egypt, ATM reliability can be a gamble. Power outages or old hardware make this a common fear. People often wait a few minutes after a transaction just to be sure. There is a shared cultural 'sigh' when someone says this. Everyone has been there.
