يباشر
يباشر 30초 만에
- Means to start, commence, or undertake a task directly.
- Commonly used in professional, legal, and medical contexts.
- It is a Form III transitive verb, taking a direct object.
- Implies hands-on, personal involvement in the initiated action.
The Arabic verb يباشر (yubaashir) is a highly practical and frequently used word in both formal and semi-formal contexts. At its core, it means to start, commence, or undertake an activity directly and personally. When someone 'yubaashir' a task, they are not just planning it or delegating it; they are getting their hands on it and beginning the actual execution. This word is essential for anyone looking to navigate professional environments, understand news broadcasts, or read official documents in Arabic.
- Direct Action
- Unlike verbs that simply mean 'to begin' (like بدأ), يباشر carries a nuance of direct, hands-on involvement.
To fully grasp its meaning, consider the context of a doctor arriving at a hospital. The doctor doesn't just 'start' the day; they 'commence' their medical duties. They attend to the patients directly. This is where يباشر shines. It bridges the gap between intention and physical or official initiation.
الطبيب يباشر عمله في المستشفى.
Another common scenario is in legal or police contexts. When a crime occurs, the police do not just 'start' looking; they officially 'undertake' the investigation. This official capacity is a key component of the word's semantic field.
- Official Capacity
- Often used when someone in authority begins a formal task, such as an investigation or a project.
الشرطة تباشر التحقيق في الحادث.
The root of this word is ب-ش-ر (b-sh-r), which historically relates to the skin or the surface of something. In Form III (فاعل), which is the form of يباشر, it evolved to mean 'to attend to something in person'—literally, to bring one's skin/self into direct contact with the task. This etymological background helps explain why the word feels so 'hands-on'.
المدير يباشر المشروع الجديد بنفسه.
- Personal Involvement
- The word emphasizes that the subject is the one doing the work, not someone else.
In everyday conversation, while you might hear people use 'بدأ' (bada'a) for simple things like starting a movie or starting to eat, 'يباشر' is reserved for tasks, jobs, duties, and responsibilities. It elevates the register of your speech, making you sound more educated and precise.
متى ستباشر مهامك الجديدة؟
To summarize, 'يباشر' is your go-to verb for professional, official, and direct initiation of tasks. It is a Form III verb, meaning it follows predictable conjugation patterns, which we will explore in later sections. Mastering this word will significantly boost your ability to comprehend news media and participate in professional Arabic environments.
الفريق يباشر تنفيذ الخطة.
Using يباشر correctly involves understanding its grammatical behavior and its typical collocations. As a Form III transitive verb, it directly takes an object. This means you do not need to use a preposition between the verb and the task being started. This is a common point of confusion for learners who might try to translate 'start with' or 'start in' literally.
- Grammar Rule: Transitivity
- يباشر is transitive (متعدي). It directly affects the object. Example: يباشر العمل (He starts the work), NOT يباشر في العمل.
Let's look at the conjugation. In the present tense (المضارع), it is يُباشِرُ (yubaashiru). In the past tense (الماضي), it is باشرَ (baashara). The verbal noun (المصدر), which means 'the act of starting or undertaking', is مُباشَرة (mubaasharah). You will often see this verbal noun in formal documents, such as 'تاريخ المباشرة' (Date of commencement).
المهندس يباشر البناء غداً.
One of the most frequent uses of this verb is with the word 'عمل' (work). 'يباشر عمله' is a standard phrase used to describe someone starting their shift, their new job, or their daily tasks. It is universally understood across all Arabic-speaking regions in formal and semi-formal contexts.
- Common Collocation: Work
- يباشر العمل (yubaashir al-'amal) is the most standard way to say 'commence work'.
بعد الإجازة، يباشر الموظفون أعمالهم.
Another critical context is investigations and legal proceedings. The police, prosecutors, or committees 'يباشرون' (yubaashiroon - plural) their investigations. This implies an official mandate to look into a matter directly.
اللجنة تباشر دراسة الملف.
- Common Collocation: Investigations
- يباشر التحقيق (yubaashir at-tahqeeq) means to open or undertake an investigation.
It is also used in medical contexts. A doctor or surgeon 'يباشر' a patient or a surgery. This highlights the hands-on, direct nature of the verb, stemming from its root meaning of physical contact or direct attendance.
الجراح يباشر العملية الجراحية.
When constructing sentences, remember the subject-verb agreement. أنا أباشر (I commence), أنتَ تباشر (You commence - masc), هي تباشر (She commences), نحن نباشر (We commence). The pattern is highly regular, making it an easy verb to adopt into your active vocabulary once you master the Form III present tense vowels (u-a-i-u).
نحن نباشر مهامنا بكل جدية.
The verb يباشر is ubiquitous in specific domains of the Arabic-speaking world. While you might not hear it in a casual street conversation about starting a video game, it is absolutely central to professional, news, and administrative registers. Understanding where this word naturally occurs will help you tune your ear to it and use it appropriately.
- News Broadcasts
- News anchors use this word daily to report on government actions, police work, and corporate initiatives.
If you turn on Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya, or any local Arab news channel, you are almost guaranteed to hear this word within the first few news bulletins. Reporters use it to describe the actions of authorities. For example, when a natural disaster occurs, the civil defense 'يباشر' rescue operations. When a new law is passed, the relevant ministry 'تباشر' its implementation.
الدفاع المدني يباشر عمليات الإنقاذ.
In the workplace, this verb is a staple of corporate communication. Human Resources departments use it in contracts, onboarding emails, and official announcements. If you get a job in an Arab country, your contract will likely state the date you are expected to 'تباشر' your work.
- Corporate Environment
- Used in emails, contracts, and meetings to discuss the initiation of tasks and employment.
يرجى العلم أن الموظف الجديد سيباشر عمله الأحد القادم.
The legal and law enforcement sectors also heavily rely on this term. Police reports, court documents, and official statements frequently use 'يباشر' to describe the opening of an investigation or the execution of a warrant. It lends an air of official authority and procedural correctness to the action.
النيابة العامة تباشر التحقيق مع المتهمين.
- Medical Field
- Doctors and nurses use it to describe attending to patients or starting procedures.
In hospitals, a doctor might be paged to 'يباشر' a critical case in the emergency room. This implies immediate, hands-on medical intervention. It is much stronger and more specific than simply saying the doctor 'went to' the patient.
طبيب الطوارئ يباشر حالة المريض فور وصوله.
Finally, you will encounter this word in academic and administrative writing. Universities might announce that a committee will 'تباشر' reviewing applications. It is a formal, elegant way to indicate that a process has officially begun.
الجامعة تباشر استقبال طلبات التسجيل.
While يباشر is a straightforward verb once you understand its function, learners often make a few predictable errors when incorporating it into their Arabic output. These mistakes usually stem from direct translation from English or confusion with other Arabic verbs that mean 'to start'.
- Mistake 1: Adding a Preposition
- The most common error is treating يباشر as an intransitive verb that needs a preposition, like 'يباشر في' (starts in) or 'يباشر بـ' (starts with).
In English, we often say 'He started on the project' or 'She commenced with the investigation'. Translating this directly leads to incorrect Arabic. 'يباشر' is a transitive verb; it takes its object directly. You should say 'يباشر المشروع' (He commences the project), not 'يباشر في المشروع'.
خطأ: هو يباشر في العمل.
صواب: هو يباشر العمل.
Another frequent mistake is using 'يباشر' for trivial, everyday actions. Because it translates to 'start', a beginner might say 'أباشر الأكل' (I commence eating) or 'أباشر الفيلم' (I commence the movie). While grammatically correct, it sounds comically formal and inappropriate for the context. For everyday actions, use 'بدأ' (bada'a).
- Mistake 2: Register Mismatch
- Using يباشر for casual, non-professional actions makes the speaker sound unnaturally formal.
استخدم 'بدأ' للأشياء البسيطة، ولا تستخدم يباشر إلا للمهام الرسمية.
Learners also sometimes confuse the vowels in the present tense. Because it is a Form III verb, the present tense prefix takes a Damma (ُ), making it 'yubaashir' (يُباشِر), not 'yabaashir' (يَباشر). Mispronouncing the prefix vowel can momentarily confuse a native speaker or make your Arabic sound less polished.
- Mistake 3: Vowel Pronunciation
- Pronouncing the first letter with a Fatha (ya) instead of a Damma (yu).
النطق الصحيح هو يُباشِر بضم الياء.
Lastly, be careful not to confuse 'يباشر' with 'يبشّر' (yubash-shir). While they share the same root letters (ب-ش-ر), 'يبشّر' is a Form II verb and means 'to bring good news' or 'to preach'. The Form III 'يباشر' has a long 'aa' sound after the baa, which is crucial for distinguishing the meaning.
لا تخلط بين يُباشِر (يبدأ العمل) ويُبشِّر (ينقل خبراً سعيداً).
الوزير يباشر مهامه اليوم.
The Arabic language is rich with verbs that express the concept of starting or beginning. While يباشر has its specific niche of direct, official undertaking, it is helpful to understand its synonyms and how they differ in nuance and usage. This will allow you to choose the most precise word for your intended meaning.
- يبدأ (Yabda') - To Start / Begin
- This is the most general and common word for starting. It can be used for anything from starting a car to starting a conversation.
Unlike يباشر, يبدأ is neutral in register. You can use it in highly formal contexts or very casual street slang. If you are ever in doubt about which word to use, يبدأ is almost always a safe, grammatically correct fallback, even if it lacks the specific 'hands-on' nuance of يباشر.
الدرس يبدأ الآن، لكن المعلم يباشر الشرح.
Another related verb is يشرع (Yashra'). This verb also means to begin or commence, but it often carries a nuance of embarking on a process or entering into a state of doing something. It is frequently followed by the preposition في (in) or a present tense verb.
- يشرع (Yashra') - To Embark / Proceed
- Often used in literary or formal contexts to indicate the initiation of a continuous action.
شرع في الكتابة بعد أن باشر عمله.
We also have ينطلق (Yantaliq), which literally means 'to launch' or 'to take off'. It is used metaphorically to mean starting a project, a campaign, or a journey with energy and momentum. While يباشر is about the official assumption of a task, ينطلق is about the dynamic forward movement of starting.
- ينطلق (Yantaliq) - To Launch / Set off
- Emphasizes the energetic start or physical departure.
ينطلق المشروع غداً، وسوف نباشر التنفيذ فوراً.
Finally, يستهل (Yastahill) means to open or begin, often used for speeches, ceremonies, or the very first part of an event. It has a very formal, almost ceremonial ring to it.
يستهل الرئيس خطابه قبل أن يباشر الاجتماع.
كل هذه الكلمات تعني البداية، لكن يباشر تتميز بالعمل المباشر.
