Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Croatian verbs come in pairs: one for ongoing/repeated actions (Imperfective) and one for completed/single actions (Perfective).
- Use Imperfective for habits or ongoing processes: 'Čitam knjigu' (I am reading/I read a book).
- Use Perfective for a finished, single event: 'Pročitao sam knjigu' (I have finished reading the book).
- Perfective verbs cannot be used in the present tense to describe current actions.

Meanings
Verbal aspect defines whether an action is viewed as an ongoing process or a completed, bounded event.
Ongoing/Habitual
Actions that are repeated or currently in progress.
“Svaki dan trčim u parku.”

Completed/Single
Actions that have reached a specific end point or are viewed as a single, total unit.
“Danas sam otrčao pet kilometara.”
