Contextual Clues for Aspect Choice

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Croatian verbs come in pairs: one for ongoing/repeated actions (Imperfective) and one for completed/single actions (Perfective).

  • Use Imperfective for habits or ongoing processes: 'Čitam knjigu' (I am reading/I read a book).
  • Use Perfective for a finished, single event: 'Pročitao sam knjigu' (I have finished reading the book).
  • Perfective verbs cannot be used in the present tense to describe current actions.
