Суугаарай

суугаарай

Please sit down

Inviting someone to take a seat.

🌍

문화적 배경

When told to sit, it is polite to sit quickly rather than hovering, as standing can be seen as being in a rush or being disrespectful to the host's space. The north side of the Ger is for guests. If someone says 'Суугаарай' and points north, they are giving you the highest honor. Mongolians have a very strong culture of giving up seats. Not saying 'Суугаарай' to an elder while standing up for them is considered a major social lapse. In Ulaanbaatar offices, 'Суугаарай' is often accompanied by a hand gesture with the palm facing up, never pointing with a single finger.

🎯

The Hand Gesture

Always gesture with an open palm when saying this. Pointing with one finger is considered rude.
