أخذ موعداً

You use the verb أخذ (to take) and conjugate it based on who is doing the booking. If you are doing it, you say أخذتُ (I took). If you are asking someone else to do it, you use خذ (take!). You usually follow it with مع (with) and the person you are meeting. It is simple, direct, and very common in daily life.

Use this when you need a specific time slot. It works perfectly at the doctor’s office. Use it when calling a government agency. It is also great for booking a haircut or a business consultation. If you are texting a busy friend and want to sound jokingly formal, you can use it too. It implies that the meeting is set and confirmed.

Do not use this for casual hangouts with friends. If you are just grabbing coffee, use نتقابل (we meet). Using أخذ موعداً with your best friend might make them think you are being sarcastic. It sounds a bit too stiff for a spontaneous dinner. Also, do not use it for booking a hotel room; use حجز (booking) instead.

In many Arabic-speaking cultures, social time can be quite flexible. However, the professional world runs on مواعيد (appointments). There is a growing respect for punctuality in modern Arab cities. Interestingly, the word موعد comes from the root meaning 'promise.' So, taking an appointment is like securing a promise of time.

You will often hear حجز موعد (booking an appointment) instead. It is almost identical in meaning. In some dialects, people might just say عندي موعد (I have an appointment). If you want to sound very polite, you might say أود تحديد موعد (I would like to set an appointment).
