لحظة

You can use لحظة all by itself. It is a complete sentence in most casual settings. If you want to be more specific, you can say لحظة واحدة (one single moment). To be extra polite, just add من فضلك (please) at the end. It works perfectly at the start of a sentence or as a quick interruption. You will hear it in every Arabic-speaking country from Morocco to Iraq.

Use it when your phone rings and you need to step away. Use it at a restaurant when the waiter asks for your order too soon. It is perfect for texting when you are typing a long reply. If someone knocks on your door while you are putting on shoes, shout لحظة! through the wood. It tells people you are coming and acknowledges their presence. It is the ultimate social lubricant for small delays.

Do not use لحظة if you actually need ten minutes. That is a 'minute' (دقيقة) or 'a little while' (شوية). Using it for long delays might make people impatient. Avoid using it in very high-stakes formal presentations to interrupt a superior. In those cases, a full sentence like 'Excuse me, may I speak?' is better. Also, do not use it if someone is in a life-or-death hurry. It sounds too casual for emergencies.

Time in many Arabic-speaking cultures can feel more fluid than in the West. However, لحظة is usually respected as a very short window of time. There is a beautiful emphasis on patience (صبر) in the culture. By saying لحظة, you are asking for a small gift of patience. It is often accompanied by a specific hand gesture. You put your fingertips together pointing upward, which reinforces the 'wait a bit' message.

You will often hear ثانية (one second) which is even faster. In Egyptian dialect, people might say ثانية واحدة. In the Levant, you might hear لحظة شوي (a moment, a little). Even though the sounds change slightly across borders, لحظة remains the gold standard. It is recognized by every Arabic speaker regardless of their local dialect.
