Possessive Suffixes with Nouns

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Azerbaijani, you don't use 'my' or 'your' as separate words; you attach a suffix to the noun based on vowel harmony.

  • For 'my' (1st person), add -m or -ım/-im/-um/-üm depending on the final vowel.
  • For 'your' (2nd person), add -n or -ın/-in/-un/-ün.
  • For 'his/her/its' (3rd person), add -sı/-si/-su/-sü or -ı/-i/-u/-ü.
Noun + (Vowel Harmony Suffix) = Possessed Noun

Vowel Harmony First

Always look at the last vowel of the word before choosing your suffix. It's the most important step.
⚠️

Don't Over-Translate

Don't try to translate 'my' as a separate word every time. It's part of the noun.
🎯

Practice with Body Parts

Body parts are a great way to practice because they always take possessive suffixes.
💬

Be Polite

Use the plural 'Sizin' (your) when speaking to strangers or elders.

Smart Tips

Check the last vowel. If it's 'a' or 'ı', use 'ı'. If 'e' or 'i', use 'i'.

Kitab-im Kitab-ım

Always use the suffix. It sounds more natural and affectionate.

Ata Atam

You can drop the pronoun 'Mənim' to sound more casual.

Mənim kitabım Kitabım

Remember: Plural suffix first, then possessive.

Kitabım-lar Kitab-larım

Pronunciation

kitab-ım (i-ı)

Vowel Harmony
