Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use Aorist for specific, finished moments; use Present Perfect for life experiences or results that matter right now.
- Aorist (свършено) is for a 'point' in time: Вчера купих хляб (Yesterday I bought bread).
- Present Perfect (неопределено) is for 'experience': Купувал съм хляб оттук (I have bought bread from here).
- Perfect requires the verb 'to be': Аз съм бил (I have been) vs. Аз бях (I was).
Meanings
The distinction between these two tenses allows Bulgarian speakers to specify whether a past action is a completed historical event (Aorist) or a past action with current relevance or unknown timing (Present Perfect).
Definite Past (Aorist)
Used for actions that happened at a specific, known time in the past, often accompanied by time markers like 'yesterday' or 'at 5 o'clock'.
“Вчера се запознах с него.”
“Миналото лято бяхме в Гърция.”
Indefinite Experience (Present Perfect)
Used to talk about life experiences where the exact timing is not important, only that the event occurred at least once.
“Бил ли си някога в Пловдив?”
“Никога не съм ял такава храна.”
Present Result (Present Perfect)
Used when a past action has a direct result or consequence in the present moment.
“Загубил съм си ключовете (and I don't have them now).”
“Той е заминал за София (and he is still there).”
